Body
Body types are as different as apples and oranges (or apples and pears) due to gender, genetics, and lifestyle choices. While you can actively influence some of these factors, many are completely out of your control. For example, pregnancy and dramatic weight fluctuations can leave changes that won’t respond to diet and exercise alone. In some cases, plastic surgery may be the answer to creating a more appealing and balanced physique. Plastic surgery does not help you lose weight, but a capable surgeon can remove excess tissue, tighten loose areas, and ultimately influence where you gain weight in the future.
Options for body contouring range from non-invasive fat removal with no downtime or discomfort (Zeltiq’s CoolSculpt™) to body lift procedures that require more extensive surgeries and recovery. We base decisions on your history of weight fluctuations, skin quality, fat distribution, muscle laxity, medical risk, and commitment to making healthy choices in the future to maintain results.
Because there may be many options available, a consultation with physical exam is essential prior to our making appropriate recommendations. Dr. Folk is professionally trained to perform the full spectrum of body contouring that is available. We have the experience and expertise to help you choose the procedures that are most appropriate for you.

CoolSculpt™ by Zeltiq
Coolsculpt™ technology by Zeltiq is a tremendous breakthrough using a non-invasive, effective, reliable, and FDA-approved method of fat removal. Envision a powerful vacuum cleaner attachment about the size of your hand placed against the unwanted bulge that sucks up the skin and fat against cooling plates. While the skin is protected, the fat is cooled for one hour, to the point that ice crystals will form within the lipids of the fat cells. This leads to a form of cell death called apoptosis. Your inflammatory cells will then clear approximately 20% of the fat from the treated area at two months, and this may continue for several more months. You can repeat the procedure in the same area as early as one month for an additive effect.
The best candidates for Coolsculpt are those with subcutaneous fat in the trunk area (think tummy, back, love-handle, muffin-top), good elasticity to the skin, and who are at normal body weight or mildly overweight. Because there is no surgery, no drugs, and no downtime this is a fantastic alternative for many patients. You can multi-task during your treatments by reading, talking on your phone, or even getting your Botox! You can even go straight to the gym once you are done since there are no limitations on your post-treatment activities and very minimal discomfort.
Expect to be bruised and swollen for several days, with mild tenderness and numbness. You will then experience some mild tingling or itching in the area for a few additional days. The area may stay slightly numb for the next 1-2 months.
We currently have three hand-pieces (the new jumbo that treats twice the area of the smaller ones was just released in late October 2010), and at this time legs are really not recommended with the current technology. They are working hard to come out with a reliable hand-piece for that area, as well are others so stay tuned!
Our staff has been fully trained in evaluating and treating patients, so if you are a better candidate for procedures like liposuction or an abdominoplasty, you will get honest advice. Our biggest warning to patients is to beware of how addicting this can be! It is amazing to watch your body change as you continue to sculpt and refine without giving up a single work out, vacation day, or sick day.
